Backyard Movie Nights

This is a particular interest of mine. Backyard movie nights were a common event during my college years. It first began as an event for the Philosophy Club at San Francisco State University; but it turned into a kind of bring-your-food-a-seat-and-a-friend (beer optional) event which was followed by watching and discussing the movie.

At first, we only brought in about ten students per movie – which was held in my backyard. Then, a few more people heard of this little gathering and became interested in the socializing aspects of this backyard movie night, and soon it could not be accommodated by my tiny backyard.

The next step was to ask the school for permission to use the lawn located out in front of the Humanities Building, along with being able to use their larger screen and projections to show movies of significant and cultural interest to a larger crowd which was soon reaching about one hundred plus students. Our little backyard movie night had turned into an intellectual journey of culture and religion, and had been uprooted from backyard movie night to front yard movie night.

The point of backyard movie night is to create an event that can be enjoyed by many people. You can create it for your children; you can set it up for intellectual journeys; you can use it for a party; you can use it for any means necessary. Just remember that backyard movie nights are memories that cannot be recreated by attending a movie theater or in-home theater. They are meant to be unique experiences similar to a drive-in movie theater except that you can enjoy them from the comfort of your own lawn chair.
